Sprint Course Map and Elevation Chart (13.4 miles)

*Note: Turn on the elevation map by clicking on either "small" or "large" in the left-hand margin under "Elevation". To navigate on GMap, use the +/- buttons on the left-hand side of the map to zoom in/out. Use the arrow buttons to move the map up/down/left/right. Exit north out of Rock Cliff and travel along State Route 32 for approximately 3 miles. Turn right onto Lower River Road south of Francis (at the bottom of the large hill) until you reach the stop sign at the end of Lower River Road (where it intersects with State Route 35). Turn left (south), climb the short hill, and return to Rock Cliff by staying on the same road (Hwy 32/35) the entire return trip. Note that the road travels through the town of Francis, with a fun downhill section south of town (40+ MPH is possible, but please stay under control during descent). There are no significant hills to climb. However, the first half of the bike course is a false flat, meaning that you will be climbing an approximate 1-2% grade initially, with the same 1-2% downhill on the return. All major intersections along the course will be manned by law enforcement to give cyclists the right-of-way.

Turn right onto State Route 35, traveling through Woodland to the turn-around ~20km from Rock Cliff. On the return, do not turn back onto Lower River Road, but instead climb the short hill and return to Rock Cliff via the same route at the Sprint course. There are no significant hills to climb. However, the first half of the bike course is a false flat, meaning that you will be climbing an approximate 1-2% grade initially, with the same 1-2% downhill on the return. Run

Run Course - Sprint ( 1 Lap , 3.1 miles ) & Olympic (2 Laps, 5.7 miles)

Additional information:

Aid Stations

Aid stations will be located at the exit of the transition area, and at every mile on the run course. There will not be an aid station on the bike course. Each athlete will receive a bottle of water and food at the finish line.

Awards

Awards will be presented to the Top 3 Overall Male and Female in each event, as well as the Top 3 Male/Female in each age group category (includes relay, Clydesdale/Athena, etc.)

Bike Number and Bib Number

You must attach the bike number provided in your race packet to your bike. The bike numbers have adhesive on the back that will not harm the paint on your bike frame. Failure to securely attach the number will result in a USAT time penalty. You DO NOT need to wear the bib number during the swim or bike. However, it MUST be worn during the run. Safety pins will be provided at packet pickup for those who need them.

Body marking (Saturday morning only)

You will be body marked on your hand, shoulders and legs, indicating your race number, event, and age. You may then proceed to the transition area and arrange your equipment. No unregistered individuals will be allowed in the transition area for safety and liability purposes.

Charity

TriUtah believes in giving back to the community. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Highland and South Summit High School athletic programs.

Directions

From Salt Lake City and Interstate 80: Turn off onto Highway 40 near Park City and head South approximately 12 miles. You will pass the Mayflower exit (Hailstone entrance, the main Jordanelle entrance) along the way. Continue on Hwy 40 past the dam. It will appear that you are leaving the reservoir area and heading towards Heber City. Look for signs saying Highway 32/Francis and turn left onto Highway 32. Follow Hwy 32 approximately 7.4 miles and turn left into the Rock Cliff area. You will travel down a two-lane road about 1 1/2 miles until you reach the Ranger fee station.

From Provo/Orem: Take Highway 189 through Provo Canyon all the way past Deer Creek Reservoir and into Heber City. Hwy 189 dead ends into Hwy 40 at a stoplight in Heber City. Turn left and travel 4.5 miles through downtown Heber and towards Park City. Turn right onto Highway 32. Follow Hwy 32 7.4 miles and turn left into the Rock Cliff area. You will travel down a two-lane road about 1 1/2 miles until you reach the Ranger fee station.

Inclement Weather

In case of inclement weather, the race directors reserve the right to modify or cancel any portion of the triathlon if weather or course conditions compromise athlete safety.

Lodging

Camping: The Rock Cliff Recreation Area has 51 campsites available. Because this is a nature area, it is necessary to pack in your gear to your campsite. If Rock Cliff becomes full, there are an additional 120 campgrounds at the Hailstone site on the other side of the lake about 25 minutes away. All Rock Cliff campsites will be reserved through TriUtah. Please watch for an email update with pertinent information.

Hotels/Motels: There are numerous hotels in both Heber City and Park City, Utah. If you plan to stay through the weekend, we certainly recommend Park City's Main Street ambiance. Motels in Heber City are approximately 20 minutes from Rock Cliff area at Jordanelle. Plan on at least 40 minutes from Park City hotels and motels.

Medical

Medical personnel will be on-site. Certified lifeguards and the Utah Homeland Security dive team will be present during the swim on watercraft and kayaks.

Packet pick up

Packet pickup is available on Tuesday August 18th at Salt Lake Running Company/Sugar house location from 7-8:30 PM and race morning on site from 6:30-8:30 AM. You will receive your race packet (includes bib number, bike number, race information, etc), swim cap, race technical shirt, etc. (NOTE: Timing chip pickup and body marking will be on Saturday morning ONLY). All athletes will receive a goody bag.

Note: You MAY NOT pick up a packet/timing chip for another person. This can lead to timing chip switch, etc. You must pick up your own packet, no exceptions.

Parking and Busing (IMPORTANT!)

On Saturday morning, driving into for drop off and/or parking WILL NOT be allowed at or inside the Rock Cliff area once again this year. There is also NO parking along Hwy 32. The Utah Highway Patrol and Wasatch County Sheriff will be present ready to ticket and tow anyone who does. There will NOT be a "drop-off" zone inside the park (same as last year). You will need to ride your bike in from the parking area in Francis on Saturday morning (~3.5 miles). **Plan ahead as you will need to either pack your stuff in a backpack and carry it on the bike, or have friends/relatives bring it for you on the shuttles.

There is a designated parking area in the town of Francis ~3.5 miles from Rock Cliff (southeast corner from the blinking 4-way stoplight at the top of the hill, the only signal light in Francis). Shuttles will begin at 6:00AM and will loop continuously between the parking area and Rock Cliff until ~2pm.

Q: How do I get my bike back to my car after the race?
A: Space permitting, bikes are allowed on the shuttle buses after the race. *Bikes are NOT allowed on the shuttles before the race.
Q: How do spectators get to the race?
A: All spectators must ride the shuttles to the race. Again note that the shuttles will be running continuously from 6AM to 2PM. Buses will unload inside the park at the Nature Center Round-about. For those with small children and/or those needing extra assistance, it is HIGHLY recommended that you arrive prior to 9:00AM.
Q: How much is it to ride the shuttle and enter Jordanelle State Park?
A: Entrance fee to the park for all spectators ages 8 and older is $2 per person and is payable BEFORE BOARDING THE SHUTTLES. This $2 fee is already included in the athlete's registration fee. For spectators riding the shuttles in, the fee will be collected as you board. Folding strollers are permitted on the shuttles. Please have exact change ready. We will not have change. Please be considerate of the Utah State Park and pay your $2 with a smile. It is because of them that we are able to hold this event.

Park Guidelines: Rock Cliff Nature Area is just that, nature. Everything from the wildlife to the boardwalks will remind you of why you love the outdoors.

Please remember to follow these few important guidelines:
1. Dogs: Do not bring your dogs or other pets. Animals are NOT allowed on the buses and are NOT allowed in the general Rock Cliff area, other than along the single paved road. Rock Cliff is a sensitive nature habitat, so please respect this mandate.
2. Litter/Trash: Please clean up any garbage/trash in your transition area and respect the Rock Cliff Nature Area. Please do not litter.

All athletes are required to retrieve any gel packet or water bottle that is discarded during the bike. A USAT "abandoning of equipment" time penalty will result if witnessed by a USAT official for littering. Please also keep control of all gel packets on the bike and run.

Photography

Zazoosh! (formerly Joaquim Hailer Photography) will be at the event providing photo opportunities. Photo previews will be available for purchase early the following week.

Podcast

Tri-Talk, Utah's leading triathlon podcast provider, will be producing a podcast that will be available for download approximately two weeks prior to the event. This is a great source for up-to-date information about packet pickup, description of the courses, and more.

Registration

There will be NO day-before or day-of-race registration. No additional registrations will be accepted once online registration closes.

Relay Teams (Important!)

At packet pickup, please have all team members present. You will not be given your race packet until all team members are present. Each relay team member will wait inside the transition area at your team's bike rack location where you will transfer your timing chip from one team member to another. Each team will be issued one swim cap, one bike number, one bib number, and one timing chip. Each relay team (either 2- or 3-person) will be issued a single timing chip. The timing chip will act as the relay "baton". The chip handoff will take place at your assigned bike rack location corresponding to your bike/bib number.

Swim Caps

Swimcaps corresponding to your event distance will be provided at packet pickup. The issued cap must be worn during the swim.

Timing

Electronic chip timing of the event will be provided by Milliseconds. All participants will be timed and will be provided with 5 splits (swim, T1, Bike, T2, Run). Results will be posted on Saturday at http://www.milliseconds.com. Instructions for chip use will be provided in your race packet.

Transition Area

There will be a single transition area for 2009 down by the water. Once again the Rock Cliff area will be closed to the general public during the race. The finish line will be on the grass field located just over the bridge and adjacent to the North Pavilion.

USAT

For general questions regarding USAT insurance, rules, regulations and membership click on the following link: http://www.usatriathlon.org/

What Athletes Need to Know About Insurance Coverage: When an athlete purchases an annual USAT license or one-day permit, a portion of those fees goes to cover the cost to provide them with excess medical insurance. This coverage only extends to their participation in a USA Triathlon sanctioned event.

If you have questions specific to your coverage, please email to sanction@usatriathlon.org or call the group benefits department at ESIX at 1-800-342-4371.

Water/Aid Stations

There will be an aid station at the transition area for the beginning of the bike. Two water bottles on the bike are recommended for the Olympic event. Run aid stations will be located every mile on the run course. Also, each athlete will receive a bottle of water at the finish line.

Wetsuits

Recommended but not required. Water temperature will likely be ~70F. Due to wetsuit tears from volunteer wetsuit stripping in past events, there WILL NOT be wetsuit strippers.
