Jordanelle T2 and Bike Course Preview:

Hi All!

I hope you are all set for a great weekend, and if you are racing, I wish you the BEST of Luck out there! Swim like a fish, Ride like you stole it and Run with whatever happens to be left in the tank;) I hope that all of you take the opportunity to go out and support the Tour of Utah, as we are very privileged to have a world class event in our own backyards… I hope to see you out there! After the race is over Saturday the 21st, head over to Park City to watch the down-town Criterium which is stage 4 of The Tour of Utah! It will be lightning fast, and the crits are always a blast to be a part of! For those of you preparing for the TriUtah Jordanelle triathlon, it is always a good idea to preview the course if you can… I know it’s a long ways up there so if you cant, I guess you are stuck with my Bike Course preview. Ha ha! Enjoy!

After getting onto your Stallion ride and head off into the sunrise, you will be treated to a  piece of Pave’ past the park entrance and out onto the main road… once you make the left hand turn you will gradually start an uphill false-flat… be patient with your body as your hips and muscles will still be trying to warm up after the chilly swim. If you aren’t going as fast as you think you should be, give it some time and the speed will come. The bike course winds around the bottom side of Francis with some rollers to warm your legs and get your heart rate up.  If you are racing the sprint you will take a left where Lower River Road meets Highway 35… there was some confusion to this at a race earlier this year. If you are  are racing the Olympic distance event, keep heading out  towards the next town (right at Highway 35) before you meet the turn-around. The bike course is a grueling grind up to the flip… make sure that you are ready to battle the bike on race day, as it isn’t ladies day at the Country Club out there;) Put your head down and enjoy the pain… you will be treated to a nice downhill return on the way  home. The choice of wheels is six’s for this race, as you would have benefit from both lighter wheels going out and benefit from a disc coming home. I don’t think you can go wrong with either type of wheel. Be careful as the road will be open to traffic… make sure that you look around at the four-way stop in Francis, the police will be there helping with traffic and do your part to get home safely! After getting through the stop sign, be ready for a screaming downhill ride back to transition… it is a long, steep hill and you will be flying! Once you have made it through the flat drag to the right hand turn to head back to T2, remember to use caution as athletes will likely be on the run course.

Once you hit T2, rack your bike, throw on your kicks and get ready for a flat beginning to the run, with some hard hills packed in the middle each lap of the run…

I wish you the best of preparations for the event! Train hard, recover harder and smile lotsJ

Thank you to TriUtah!!! Thanks to my  sponsors: First Endurance, Pool n’ Patio, The Bike Shoppe and CityWorks.com!!! You guys are the BEST!!!

Jordanelle Run Course Preview:

Hi All,

I trust everyone is getting ready for a nice weekend! Get some good training in and enjoy a little time off of work! I hope all of you have great buildups to the Jordanelle triathlon which is a week away… I am sad that the summer is drawing to a close in Northern Utah, it always seems as you are just hitting your stride and getting into a great groove the warm weather leaves us and the cooler air joins us,. Nonetheless, we will train on! Right? Ha ha! If you have any big events coming here at the end of the season in warmer locales, Best of Luck and dig the pain cave!

As you are leaving the boat ramp area at Rock Cliff, it is about a half-mile to where the run course loops begin… so if you are racing the Olympic distance event, you will be treated to a shorter day at the office! However, if you are racing the Sprint course you will be racing the standard 5k/3.1miles. As you make your way to the loops it is a ever so slight downhill grade and a very flat first mile all together… after that, all hell will break loose as you make the right hander up the main highway hitting the hills! Remember to tip your head back towards the sky and embrace the hurt coming your way… if your out there, you may as well enjoy it! Once you make it up the hill, it is followed by a slight right hand turn and then a very steep, dirt path descent… once you make it down the shrarpy, you will make a left hand turn into the trees and through the perilous up and downs of the 5/10k run. After you have had your fun in the dirt hills you will hop onto the boardwalk which will take you to the finish line for the sprint or back to the flat for the start of lap two. For some athletes, there are struggles in the heat and inclines which may cause cramping on race day. Anyone that has had this experience in racing knows is no Buena! Make sure on the week of the race you drink plenty of water and take in some electrolyte drinks which would be First Endurance EFS drink, Hammer Heed, GU Brew or whatever is to your liking. Drink at least one serving a day even if your not training as this will help keep your levels topped off… also some athletes use E-caps or something to this extent on race morning and during the race. This will help keep your muscles in order… if it doesn’t help on race day, then you may want to examine your normal every day diet. Ha ha, this seems to always puzzle people! After returning home after your second loop as an Olympic distance athlete, celebrate with your friends, family and children of whoever you brought along! Chris and TriUtah always have an excellent assortment of fruit, bagels, cookies, cool water and electrolyte drinks and much, much more… a very good way to end a hard day at the office!

Thanks for reading everyone and I look forwards to seeing you out at Jordanelle! Be safe out training, remember your smiles and have a good time out there! Keep up your great work and continue to plug away!

Thanks again to Chris and the TriUtah crew, the volunteers and the people behind the scenes who make these races happen!!! You guys truly never get enough credit, Cheers to you!!!

Thanks to The Bike Shoppe, First Endurance and CityWork my incredible sponsors!!!

Dantley Young – Jordanelle Swim Course/T1 Preview

Jordanelle Swim Course and T1 Preview:

Hey All!

I hope all of you had a fantastic race up at Echo last month and that all of your training has been spot on! Not too far away now is the fantastic Jordanlle Triathlon coming up here Saturday August 21st… It is a great place to start your triathlon career, end your season and use as a build up to your next big event. The race is always very competitive as some athletes have been training and racing hard since the spring. It can be used as a great gauge of where your fitness is at, as you will have a shot to race many strong athletes in both the Sprint and Olympic events respectively.  By the end of August, the town of  Francis is quite chilly in the morning… on race day remember to pack some gloves, a long sleeve shirt/jersey and some leggings to keep you warm before the race. Depending where you park on the 21st you may have a good 10 minute ride into transition with a big downhill which may freeze you up a bit… The air temperature will likely be in the low 40’s in the shade so dress accordingly, there is nothing worse than getting shivers before your race and never warming up. Ha ha, you want to be sure to keep those muscles nice and warm before the race so they will fire on all cylinders when the gun goes off!

The swim course is very basic, with a routine triangle… for the Sprint you will have one loop and the Olympic you will have two loops. My recommendation for warming up is: don’t get in the water too early, when you are sure you are ready to hop in and don’t need to take care of anything else go for it. The water will likely be a little chilly and as mentioned before, you don’t want to allow those muscles to tighten and seize up before you start your race. When the gun goes off, remember to stay relaxed and breathe! These are the two greatest pieces of advice I can offer… the washing machine effect will take place for the first 3-4 minutes of the swim while athletes sort themselves out. Be ready for war in the beginning, and expect to get knocked around a bit… its good for you! Ha ha, once things have calmed down a bit and you get a little clean water, start looking for that first buoy so you don’t swim off course… On my third blog for the Echo Triathlon, I left a great link for sighting advice. Watch the video, you will be glad you did! I believe the race starts at 9am instead of  8, the morning will have a chance to warm up a bit. Make sure when you hit the open water or pool this next  week, swim 8-10×25 with your head up out of  the water to get used to the feeling of sighting… try and swim the lengths with your head forward and catching a breath in the forward position, rather than turning your head to the side each time. Remember, you have goggles on and getting a little bit extra to drink never hurt anyone;) Once you have  finished the swim, it’s a quick 25 meter run up the boat ramp and your into T1:) Nice Work!

T1 is at the end of the road, right above the boat ramp… it is located about a half-mile away from the finish line. There is plenty of room there at T1 on a nicely paved road. Bring a towel to put your helmet, your run shoes and anything else you need on the ground underneath your bike. The racks will be assorted by Elite/Age-Group and Sprint/Olympic with your name on the bike rack… a nice little addition that TriUtah always has at their races. Transition will usually close up around 15 minutes before start time of the first Olympic wave, make sure you get to the race in plenty of time so you can enjoy your morning before the race starts. You will race much better if you are relaxed before the start instead of helter-skeltered trying to get things setup;) It will also allow you plenty of time for a last minute potty break if you need it. After you have exited the water, your trusty steed will be waiting for you in T1 ready to rock and roll! Have a great ride out there on the challenging bike course and remember to smile like you mean it out there! Rip it up!

I will be previewing the bike course, T2 and the run course as well… be sure to check it out as they are a bit more challenging psychologically and physically than the swim…Happy training to everyone and I look forwards to seeing you next weekend!

A BIG THANKS to TriUtah for always putting on such excellent events that run smooth as butter!! I also would like to thank the help of my sponsors: Matt Howard at The Bike Shoppe in Ogden, Robert Kunz at First Endurance and  introducing my newest sponsor CityWorks.com… Thanks for your continued support in my young career!!!

Cheers, One Love, Be Blessed,

Dantley Young
